Bitcoin Meme Shirts.

The memes that shaped Bitcoin culture, printed big enough to start a conversation.

Bitcoin memes are the closest thing the network has to folklore. Nobody voted on them and no marketing team wrote them. They came out of forum threads, late-night posts and inside jokes, and the good ones stuck around for more than a decade. A bitcoin meme shirt is a way of telling a room that you were there, or at least that you read the thread. This page collects our meme designs on black tees, each one drawn fresh rather than lifted from an image search. Under each design you will find the short backstory. For the full dictionary of phrases, from HODL to stacking sats, head to our Bitcoin slang and memes glossary.

Where these Bitcoin memes come from

  • HODL. In December 2013, during a sharp price drop, a BitcoinTalk user posted a rambling message titled "I AM HODLING". The typo outlived the crash and later picked up a backronym, Hold On for Dear Life. Our HODL tee spells it out in block letters, and the full story is in what does HODL mean.
  • Stacking sats. A satoshi, or sat, is the smallest unit of bitcoin: one bitcoin is 100 million sats. Stacking them means buying small amounts again and again, whatever the price is doing. The Stack Sats shirt turns the habit into a piggy bank. Not financial advice, just a popular meme.
  • Satoshi. Bitcoin's creator used the name Satoshi Nakamoto, published the white paper in 2008 and then stepped away. The mystery is a meme of its own, and our Satoshi tee answers it with a cheeky smiley. Read more in who is Satoshi Nakamoto.

The grid also holds a couple of tribute and arcade-style designs for collectors of the deeper cuts.

How to wear a crypto meme shirt well

Meme shirts do their best work in rooms full of people who speak the language: meetups, conferences, group photos and online calls with the camera on. Pick the meme that matches your own story. If you held through a rough year, HODL is earned. If you buy a little every week, the piggy bank is yours. One loud meme per outfit is plenty, so pair it with plain jeans or a jacket. Because every design sits on a black tee, the orange and white artwork stays the focus.

Questions

Good to know

Is HODL a typo or an acronym?

Both, in a way. It started as a typo in a 2013 forum post, and the community later read it as Hold On for Dear Life. Most Bitcoiners use it either way.

How many sats are in one bitcoin?

One hundred million. A sat is 0.00000001 BTC, which is why stacking them one small purchase at a time became such a popular meme.

Do I need to know a meme to wear the shirt?

Not at all, though it helps when someone asks. Each design on this page has a short explanation above, and the glossary covers the rest.

Who owns the memes on these shirts?

Nobody, really. The phrases belong to Bitcoin culture and grew out of forums and posts that anyone can quote. What we add is the layout, the lettering and the one-color artwork that turns a phrase into something you can wear.
