The story

Behind the Bitcoin Pizza Day tee

On May 22, 2010, bitcoin bought its first real-world goods: two pizzas. This tee celebrates what may be the priciest dinner order in internet history.

On May 18, 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz posted on the BitcoinTalk forum offering 10,000 BTC to anyone who would get him two large pizzas. Four days later another forum member ordered them for him and received the coins, worth about $41 at the time. It is widely remembered as the first purchase of physical goods with bitcoin. Bitcoiners now mark every May 22 as Pizza Day, often by buying a slice and paying in sats.

A crowd-pleaser for pizza nights, Pizza Day meetups every May and office parties where someone always asks what the date means. The slice is cheerful rather than preachy, so it works for newcomers and longtime holders alike, and it makes an easy birthday gift for a bitcoiner who loves a good story.

Questions

About this design

Who received the 10,000 BTC for the two pizzas?

A fellow BitcoinTalk member known as jercos placed the order and was paid the 10,000 BTC. Laszlo got his two pizzas, and the trade became the first widely documented example of bitcoin buying something you could hold, or in this case eat.

Why are the pepperoni slices drawn as coins?

It is a small visual joke: the toppings are the price. Each round pepperoni doubles as a coin, a reminder that those two pizzas were paid for in bitcoin rather than dollars, at a time when almost nobody accepted it.

When is Bitcoin Pizza Day celebrated?

Every year on May 22, the anniversary of the 2010 delivery. Meetups and online communities often mark it by sharing pizza paid for in sats and retelling the story. The next one falls on Saturday, May 22, 2027.
