The story

Behind the Magic Internet Money tee

Long before bitcoin was on the evening news, someone called it magic internet money, and the name stuck. This tee wears the joke with pride.

In February 2013, a crude MS Paint drawing of a wizard ran as an ad on Reddit's bitcoin forum with the words “magic internet money.” It was meant to be silly, and that is exactly why it spread. Skeptics used the phrase to mock bitcoin, and bitcoiners happily adopted it as a nickname. More than a decade later, it still captures how strange the idea sounded at first: money that lives only on the internet and that nobody controls.

A playful pick for gamers, fantasy fans and old-school redditors. The wizard hat keeps it lighthearted, so it suits game nights, conventions and casual weekends. It is also a gentle gift for someone just starting out, because nobody needs to know any jargon to enjoy it.

Questions

About this design

Is the hat taken from the original 2013 wizard meme?

No. We drew our own design: just a wizard hat with a single star, no wizard and no copy of the original artwork. The words carry the reference, and the hat nods to the meme without reusing it.

Was magic internet money meant as an insult?

It started as a lighthearted ad on Reddit's bitcoin forum, and critics later used it to wave bitcoin away. The community kept the phrase anyway. Wearing it is a way of laughing along while knowing there is real engineering behind the magic.

Is this design too nerdy to wear in public?

Not at all. The phrase is funny even to people who know nothing about bitcoin, and the hat looks like a simple fantasy graphic. Expect smiles more often than debates, which makes it easy to wear almost anywhere.
