If someone else holds the keys, they hold the bitcoin. This tee puts the oldest self-custody rule in Bitcoin right across your chest.
A bitcoin wallet is really a set of private keys, and whoever holds them controls the coins. Leave your bitcoin on an exchange and you hold a promise, not the asset. Bitcoiners learned that the hard way when the Mt. Gox exchange collapsed in 2014 and customers lost access to their funds. The saying has been repeated after every exchange failure since, and every January 3 some holders mark Proof of Keys by moving coins into wallets they control.
Made for the friend who keeps a hardware wallet and reminds everyone else to get one. Two lines of bold type make it readable across a meetup or a parking lot, so expect questions. It also suits anyone who just moved coins off an exchange for the first time.
It is a very large secret number that proves you own the bitcoin tied to an address. Your wallet uses it to sign transactions. Anyone who learns it can move the coins, which is why it is usually backed up as a list of 12 or 24 seed words.
The round bow of the key is drawn as a plain coin, which joins the two halves of the slogan into one picture: the key and the money it unlocks are the same thing. It also keeps the print to a single orange object.
It is an informal yearly event held on January 3, the anniversary of bitcoin's genesis block, first organized in 2019. Participants withdraw coins from exchanges to wallets they control, as a public reminder of the saying on this shirt. Taking part is entirely up to you.
