The story

Behind the Don't Trust, Verify tee

Bitcoin was built so nobody has to take anyone's word for anything. This tee sums up that idea in three words.

“Trust, but verify” is an old Russian proverb that Ronald Reagan made famous in the 1980s during arms talks with the Soviet Union. Bitcoiners dropped the trust part. Every full node checks every block and transaction against the rules on its own, so nobody needs to rely on a bank, an exchange or a developer to say what is true. The motto now appears wherever the community talks about running nodes, reading code or checking a claim.

Quiet confidence in shirt form. The message is clever without being aggressive, so it sits well at work, at a tech meetup or with a skeptical relative. Engineers, auditors and fact checkers tend to like it even if they hold no bitcoin.

Questions

About this design

Where does “don't trust, verify” come from?

It flips the proverb “trust, but verify,” which Ronald Reagan used often in the 1980s. In bitcoin it describes the habit of checking the rules and the ledger yourself, usually by running your own node, instead of relying on someone else's word.

How can an ordinary person verify bitcoin?

The usual way is to run a full node, free software that downloads the blockchain and checks every rule on your own computer. Many people use a small dedicated device for it. Your wallet can then connect to your node instead of a company's server.

Why is VERIFY printed bigger than the rest?

The second word is the point of the sentence, so it gets the most weight. The magnifying glass sits between the two lines as a visual pause, the moment you stop trusting and start checking for yourself.
