Some people want everything now; others plant oak trees. This tee is for the patient ones, the bitcoiners who think in decades.
Time preference is an economics term for how much a person values having something now rather than later. Someone with a low time preference is willing to wait: saving, studying, building or planting for a future payoff. Economists of the Austrian school wrote about it more than a century ago, and Saifedean Ammous's 2018 book The Bitcoin Standard brought it into everyday bitcoin talk, arguing that money which holds its value encourages people to plan further ahead.
A quiet, thoughtful design for savers, builders, gardeners and parents thinking about the long run. The sapling feels calm rather than combative, so it suits the office, a bookshop or a family gathering. People who know the phrase will nod; others may ask about the acorn.
It is how strongly you prefer a reward today over a reward later. High time preference means spending now; low time preference means delaying gratification for a bigger or safer payoff down the road. Everyone sits somewhere on that scale.
An oak takes decades to grow, and whoever plants the acorn may never sit in its shade. That makes it a fitting picture of long-term thinking: a small, patient act today for something much larger in the future.
Many bitcoiners argue that money which keeps its purchasing power rewards saving and planning, while money that loses value pushes people to spend quickly. The phrase became shorthand for that view and for the patient habits that go with it.
