Vires in numeris means strength in numbers, and bitcoiners have used it as a motto for well over a decade. This tee prints the Latin under two linked chain loops.
Vires in numeris is Latin for strength in numbers. It became a bitcoin motto through Casascius coins, the collectible physical bitcoins Mike Caldwell began making in 2011, which carried the phrase on their design. Each coin held a real bitcoin private key under a tamper-evident hologram. The motto fits the network well: bitcoin grows sturdier as more people run nodes, mine and hold their own keys, because no single party can bend the rules. Two linked chain links echo that idea.
A classic choice for history buffs, collectors and longtime bitcoiners who remember the physical coins. The Latin gives it a timeless, almost collegiate look that works at the office, a lecture or a meetup. Expect people to ask for a translation.
A common reading is VEE-rays in NOO-meh-ris, following classical Latin, though plenty of English speakers say VYE-reez. Either is fine at a meetup. What matters more is the meaning: strength in numbers, the idea that a network grows stronger as it grows.
They were physical metal coins made by Mike Caldwell beginning in 2011, each loaded with a bitcoin private key hidden under a tamper-evident hologram sticker, and they carried the vires in numeris motto. Sales ended in November 2013, and surviving pieces are now collector items.
Each link is strong because it holds onto the next one, which is strength in numbers in picture form. Chain links also hint at the blockchain, a series of blocks joined one after another, so the drawing works on two levels.
