The story

Behind the Running Bitcoin tee

Before bitcoin had a price, it had a handful of people running the software. This tee honors the two words that announced one of the very first.

On January 10, 2009, cryptographer Hal Finney tweeted two words: “Running bitcoin.” He had installed the brand new software within days of its release, and two days later he received the first bitcoin ever sent from one person to another, 10 BTC in block 170. Finney was diagnosed with ALS later in 2009 and died in 2014. A keen runner, he is remembered each January through the Running Bitcoin Challenge, an ALS fundraiser organized by his wife, Fran.

A respectful tribute for early adopters, node runners and actual runners. The sneaker gives it a sporty look that fits a 5K, the gym or a January meetup, and the small date rewards anyone who leans in to read it. Calm enough for everyday wear.

Questions

About this design

Is this shirt connected to the Finney family or the Running Bitcoin Challenge?

No. It is an independent tribute designed by Bitcoin Casual and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Finney family, the Running Bitcoin Challenge or any ALS charity. We do not claim that sales fund the challenge; to support it, give through the challenge directly.

What did Hal Finney do for bitcoin?

He was one of the first people to run the software, reported early bugs and received the first transaction from bitcoin's creator in January 2009. Before that he had built RPOW, a reusable proof of work system, and worked on PGP encryption.

Why is there a running shoe on a bitcoin shirt?

It is a double meaning. In bitcoin, running means operating the software, and Finney was also a dedicated runner. The sneaker connects both ideas and ties the design to the January run held in his memory.
