The story

Behind the A Sat in a Pear Tree tee

A pun can be small and still land. This tee takes a line from a famous holiday song and swaps the last object for a unit of bitcoin. A single orange pear hangs from a short branch with one leaf, with no tree and no bird, above two lines of bold white capitals.

The line about a partridge in a pear tree belongs to a holiday song with a long history. The earliest known printed words appeared in Mirth Without Mischief, a children's book published in London in 1780. The tune and wording most people sing today are much later, from 1909. This shirt uses only the one-line pun, not the lyrics. A sat is one hundred millionth of a bitcoin, and the pear is the only object on the shirt.

Wear it to a holiday gathering when someone starts counting down the days to Christmas, or give it to the friend who collects small bitcoin amounts for fun. It is a light joke for an office party or cookie swap. Christmas Day is Friday, December 25, 2026, and printing takes a few business days before shipping from the USA.

Questions

About this design

Why a pear and not a partridge?

A partridge would turn the drawing into a bird scene. A single pear on a short branch is simpler, so the two lines of white capitals do the joking. There is no face and no tree, and the small Bitcoin symbol under the words tells the viewer the shirt is about bitcoin. The pear is only a fruit with one leaf.

Is this design connected to a songbook or a recording?

No. The shirt is an independent joke with no link to any songbook, publisher, recording or performer. It uses only the phrase the pun needs, and the lyrics are not printed anywhere on the tee. The story on the product page notes where the older words first appeared in print, for anyone who wants to read more.

Does the pun work for people who are not into bitcoin?

Partly. The pear and the holiday phrase are easy to read, but the word sat is the bitcoin part, so the joke lands best with someone who knows the word. If a friend asks, a sat is one hundred millionth of a bitcoin. The shirt is a gift for bitcoin fans rather than a way to explain the topic.
