The story

Behind the Initial Block Download tee

Every node runner knows the wait: a new machine, a progress bar and a long evening of syncing. This shirt freezes that bar at 87 percent, a state many bitcoiners will recognize at a glance.

Initial block download, often shortened to IBD, is the term for what a new node does when it first starts: it fetches and verifies every block from the one after the genesis block up to the latest. A node that has been offline for a long time can do the same to catch up. Time varies a lot with hardware, from hours on a fast drive to days on a small board. The shirt keeps the bar at 87 percent.

Wear it to a meetup, a hackathon or the home office where a small server hums under the desk. If you are mid-sync yourself, it doubles as a status update. Everyone else gets the progress bar, and node runners get the sympathy.

Questions

About this design

What is initial block download?

It is the first sync of a new Bitcoin node, when the software downloads and checks the whole chain, block by block, until it reaches the newest one. Only after that does the node validate fresh transactions on its own. The shirt turns that long wait into a joke.

Why does the bar stop at 87 percent?

Because that is the number everyone remembers staring at. It is close enough to finish, yet far enough to keep you waiting. The figure is a joke, not a real status, and the bar is drawn in orange outline with no extra text inside.

Does a pruned node also go through this step?

Yes. A pruned node still downloads and verifies the whole chain on first start, then deletes old block files to save disk space. If that is your setup, the Pruned and Proud tee is a natural companion to this one.
