The story

Behind the First Transaction, Block 170 tee

In January 2009 the first bitcoin moved from one person to another, and the record sits in block 170. This tee marks that quiet milestone with an envelope, the oldest picture of something sent.

On January 12, 2009, block 170 recorded the first person-to-person bitcoin transaction: 10 bitcoin sent by Satoshi Nakamoto to the developer Hal Finney. Block 170 arrived nine days after the genesis block of January 3, 2009. Blocks keep coming about every ten minutes, each holding a batch of transactions. The shirt sticks to the facts of that moment, prints no names, and is not affiliated with anyone in the record.

A natural pick for the January anniversary, a history-minded meetup or any chat about how bitcoin started. The envelope is a friendly picture for newcomers, and the block number gives longtime bitcoiners something to point at and nod over.

Questions

About this design

What happened in block 170?

Block 170 holds the first transaction that moved coins between two people: 10 bitcoin, recorded on January 12, 2009. Earlier blocks contained only the mining rewards that new blocks create. Anyone can look block 170 up in the public blockchain today, and it is stored like any other block.

Why an envelope on this shirt?

A sealed envelope is the classic picture of something sent between two people, which is just what that transaction was. The seal is a plain round shape with nothing inside, so the drawing stays simple and avoids copying any logo or symbol.

Is this a shirt about a person?

No. The shirt prints no names, only the words First Transaction and Block 170. It honors the event: the first time a bitcoin payment traveled between two people on the network. The description cites the people involved as plain history, and nothing suggests endorsement.
