Halloween falls on October 31, the same date the bitcoin white paper was announced in 2008, which makes it a natural night for a bitcoin Halloween costume. The easiest ideas need one simple prop or none at all: a miner, a block, laser eyes, a paper wallet, a hardware wallet badge or a pizza. Pick one joke and commit to it.
Below you will find those costume ideas in more detail, then some candy and trick-or-treat puns, a party game for Halloween night and the story of the anniversary. Shirts for the night are linked along the way.
Easy bitcoin Halloween costume ideas for adults and families
These ideas work for adults, teens and kids. Each one is a single joke, which is the point. A joke you can explain in five words beats a pile of props.
- A miner. Wear a hard hat and a work shirt, and carry a plastic pickaxe. Bitcoin mining happens on specialized computers, so the pickaxe is pure joke, and that is part of the fun.
- A block. Wrap a cardboard box in gray paper and write "Block 0" on the front, the number of the first block in the chain. Little ones can trick-or-treat around the block with it, and the label does all the explaining.
- Laser eyes. Put on a plain black mask and stick orange or red paper strips over the eye holes as lasers. It is quick to make and gets a laugh from anyone who knows the meme.
- A paper wallet. Print a sheet with a DO NOT SHARE header and a column of made-up words, then slip it into a clear sleeve. Use made-up words only. A real key or a real seed phrase should never appear on a costume, even as a joke.
- A hardware wallet badge. Make a lanyard badge that reads "Hardware Wallet" with a small orange Bitcoin symbol. People will ask what it stores, and you decide how much to say.
- The pizza. On May 22, 2010, 10,000 bitcoin bought two pizzas, a trade bitcoiners celebrate every Pizza Day. Build a cardboard pizza slice with paper pepperoni coins, wear it over a black tee and explain the trade to anyone who asks. Our Pizza Day guide has the full story.
Candy and trick-or-treat puns
Halloween is the easiest night for a bitcoin joke, because the candy is already in the bowl. Two lines work especially well.
- Trick or sats. This is a play on trick or treat. Bitcoin is divided into smaller units called sats, and one bitcoin equals 100,000,000 sats, so asking for sats means asking for very small change. The Trick or Sats tee puts an uncarved orange pumpkin above the words, with a small Bitcoin symbol underneath.
- No tricks, just math. Bitcoin's rules are published, and anyone running a node can check them. That makes this a fitting line for a trick-or-treater who wants to be taken seriously. The No Tricks, Just Math tee sets the words beside a single candy corn.
A candy jar party game for Halloween night
If you are hosting, a candy jar makes a simple game that teaches the unit. Fill a clear jar with candy corn and tape a sign to it that reads "1 BTC = 100,000,000 sats." Guests guess how many pieces are inside, and the closest guess takes the jar home. The sign does the teaching, and the candy keeps everyone at the table.
Halloween and the white paper anniversary
Halloween has one more bitcoin date that people keep. On Friday, October 31, 2008, the bitcoin white paper was announced by email to The Cryptography Mailing List, under the name Satoshi Nakamoto. The paper runs nine pages and is titled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System. You can read it free on bitcoin.org.
October 31, 2026 is a Saturday, and it marks the paper's 18th anniversary. Our bitcoin white paper explained guide walks through the paper, and two of our tees fit the date. The P2P E-Cash Paper tee echoes the email's subject line beside a curbside mailbox with its flag raised. The Best Treat of Halloween 2008 tee is the pun version, with a plain candy pail and a small orange Bitcoin symbol.
Our designs are independent fan tributes. They are not affiliated with Satoshi Nakamoto or anyone else.
Order in time for October 31
Our tees are black unisex crew necks, priced at $39.99 in every size and printed to order by us. They ship from the USA to US addresses only. Most orders are printed and shipped within 3 to 4 business days, then take about 5 days to reach the continental US. Orders to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and other territories take about two weeks after shipping, so order earlier if that is where you live. Ordering by the middle of October leaves a comfortable cushion for the 31st. Orders over $75 ship free within the US (see our shipping policy).
