Not everyone has a spare terabyte lying around, and a lean node is still a node. This shirt puts a pair of garden shears over the words, a tidy way to say you keep your copy of the rules trimmed and checked.
Bitcoin Core has a setting called prune that tells a node to delete old block files once it has checked them. A pruned node still validates every block during its first sync and keeps the set of unspent coins, so its checks match a full archive's. The lowest target is 550 MiB. The tradeoff is that it can no longer hand old blocks to other nodes. The shears are simply that setting, drawn as a garden tool.
Wear it to a meetup, a home-lab weekend or anywhere a conversation about Raspberry Pis and disk space might break out. The shears read as gardening to everyone else, which is a nice cover for a shirt that is really about a config option.
It downloads and verifies every block from the start, then deletes the raw block files it no longer needs, keeping only a recent slice. The rules are still enforced the same way. What you give up is the ability to serve old blocks to other nodes.
Yes, and the shirt says so proudly. It validates the whole chain itself instead of trusting someone else's word, which is the point of running one. It simply stores less history on disk, so it suits laptops, small drives and modest home setups.
Pruning is a gardening word before it is a software one, so the picture makes the pun without any text inside the drawing. The shears also keep the shirt friendly for people who have no idea what a node is, which makes for a fun explanation.
