The story

Behind the Block 74,638, Fixed in Hours tee

Bitcoin's history has a few bugs worth a laugh, and this one was patched in a hurry. An orange adhesive bandage sits above three short lines about block 74,638, a 2010 incident that was closed in hours.

On August 15, 2010, block 74,638 included a transaction that used an integer overflow to create about 184 billion bitcoins. A patched client was published within five hours of the discovery. The valid chain then overtook the bad one at block 74,691, so the coins from that block never survived. Bitcoin Wiki records the incident under CVE-2010-5139. The shirt is about the speed of the fix, and it makes no claim about prices.

Developers and history buffs will get the most from this one, at a bitcoin history night or any group where somebody wants the 2010 story in short form. The bandage gives the joke a gentle first-aid feel, and the numbers do the nerdy part. It suits people who like their history with a little bite.

Questions

About this design

What was the value overflow incident?

It was a 2010 bug in which a transaction in block 74,638 used an integer overflow to create a huge number of bitcoins. A patched version of the software was published within hours of the discovery, and the valid chain later overtook the bad one at block 74,691. Bitcoin Wiki tracks it under CVE-2010-5139.

Did those extra coins survive?

No. The chain holding the bad transaction was overtaken by the valid chain at block 74,691, so the coins from that block never survived. The shirt does not compare that bug with any later event, and it says nothing about the amounts in circulation today.

Why a bandage for a software bug?

A bandage is a quick fix for a cut, and this bug got a quick fix too. The drawing is a plain pad with two strips and no brand mark, so it reads as a first-aid item rather than an advertisement. It is an independent illustration and does not link to any company or developer.
